After telling her son Michael the fable of “The Worm and the Butterfly,” Juliet—a soldier and mother—falls into a disturbing dream where she finds herself alone behind enemy lines. There she captures Sam, an enemy child, and the two wander through a surreal landscape marked by war and memory. When Juliet awakens, she hears a boy calling her, but she fails to recognize her own son—until he asks her to tell the fable once more.
