Golden Lion Award of the Venice Film Festival to Liliana Cavani ANSA

Liliana Cavani is awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 80th Venice Biennale International Film Festival.

The decision was made by the Biennale’s Board of Directors, which endorsed the proposal of the Festival’s Director Alberto Barbera.

“I’m very happy and grateful to the Venice Biennale for this beautiful surprise,” said Cavani. She has participated in the Venice Film Festival since 1965 with Philippe Pétain: Trial at Vichy, St. Mark’s Lion for Documentary.
Liliana Cavani’s other appearances at the Venice Film Festival include those with the films Francis of Assisi (1966), Galileo (1968), and The Cannibals (1969). The last films that appeared are Ripley’s Game (2002), and Clarisse (2012).

The director of the Cinema Sector of the Biennale, Alberto Barbera, “She is one of the most emblematic protagonists of the new Italian cinema of the 1960s. Liliana Cavani is a versatile artist capable of frequenting television, theater, and opera music with the same unconventional spirit, and the same intellectual restlessness that made her films famous. Hers has always been a non-conformist thought, free from ideological preconceptions and unencumbered by conditioning of any kind. She is moved by the urgency of the continuous search for a truth hidden in the most hidden and mysterious parts of the human soul, up to the borders of spirituality.”

Liliana Cavani, the world-renowned Italian filmmaker from Emilia Romagna, is therefore enjoying a new sign of appreciation on the eve of her 90th birthday. She will to be celebrated on January 12, after being recently honored with the Master of Cinematic Awards by her colleague Terry Gilliam at the closing gala of the Capri, Hollywood festival. Today in Rome she celebrated her 90th birthday with Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano. There were also few prominent Italian players and directors including Paolo Sorrentino, Marco Bellocchio, Pupi Avati and Paolo Virzi.

Cavani has been an acclaimed film director for over forty years, responsible for such masterpieces as “Francesco,” “The Night Porter,” “The Skin,” “Beyond Good and Evil”. She is also well known for ‘”The Berlin Affair,” “Ripley’s Game,” as well as the TV series “Einstein” and “De Gasperi.” Much awaited is now her latest movie “The Order of Time,” based on the novel by Carlo Rovelli and starring Claudia Gerini, Alessandro Gassmann and Edoardo Leo.

Legendary US composer Diane Warren will also be honored by the Italian community. She has recently launched a promotional campaign to have her acknowledged with Honorary Oscar after thirteen nominations. Warren was awarded the prize at the 13th Annual Governor’s Awards held last November in Los Angeles.
